The day started as any other work day. Mind-blowing work requiring atleast 0.1% of the brain - that part being the control of the fingers to speedily & methodically type away whilst the rest of the brain remains somewhat free to roam the endless bounds of the possible... starting off with the daily battle of a ruggedly handsome Irish actor battling an ex-Take That band member for the affections of young Ronelle. The victor changes daily. Once this tiresome battle was done for the morning (yes, there are times the loser challenges the victor more than once a day..) my mind meandered to the task our parents had of naming us.
It's strange (yet perhaps not unusual) how someone’s name gives you a mental picture of them. I deal with various people on email and phone. One guys name is Rewinder (haha yes I know) and I have a bit of a geeky, not-so-intelligent view of him tho his emails are always articulate, etc. Then another guys name is Tom Speed – and that’s quite a sexy name (sounding wise), so have this lovely mental image of him meanwhile, back at the ranch, he could be a balding, obese old man squandering precious company time & resources surfing fetish sites for all I know! (Tom if you're reading this - I'm sure you're not....give me call...)
Another lucky colleague to be mentioned - Jon Townsend. Standard name. Spelt differently - could be good? Sounded quite cute and somewhat cheeky on the phone and we always have a laugh while getting work done (normally him laughing AT me). He came up to see me a few weeks back and he’s not as cute as I'd dared hope. Quite strange innit.
On to my own name - went in to my bank to apply for a dingbat (censored due to identity theft running rife these days) – if I hadn't gone in- what impression would they get from my weird first name and would it have prejudiced my application based on their mental pictures? Further to that, when I met the lady who dealt with my application she commented on my unusual (yet beautiful) name. Interesting. Or is it...
